Beth Sarah - Love is Dead

I'm not going to pretend that this isn't me - I am Beth Sarah and yes, I'm telling you about my own song. I wrote Love is Dead when I was 19, after being thoroughly humiliated by a man I thought I could trust. He ghosted me, and the only response I received from my attempted communication was a text saying, 'this is his girlfriend, please leave him alone'. I was heartbroken. At the time, I had some good friends who lived in a large flat share in Amelia Crescent. I played them this song and together they recorded me, with the original mix being created by Dan Leggett. Andy Grinham, Dan's flatmate, then took the vocal and created the ambient chillout version. A while later, Dan's PC needed repairing and the guy who worked on it, Mike Hud-Leder, was also a music producer and found the stems, resulting in a third mix. I decided to release all three versions together. Why now, over 20 years later? I couldn't really say. The idea came into my head and I ran with it! And strangely, despite the painful nature of the song, it does have an empowering element in the final line of each chorus - 'I will live on and on'. I do actually love this song, and ultimately the feelings it evokes for me revolve more around the collaborative effort in recording and the friendships we still have than the initial inspiration for the lyrics. Always focus on the positives :-)
